SPANDEX at Clemson University, Fall 2014

Here at Wishbone, we are so excited to be returning to Clemson University this fall! They have graciously given us the opportunity to restage Spandex, our hit show on superheroes and the nature of the American dream, which we performed at Fringe Festivals in Chicago, IL and Edinburgh, Scotland.

This opportunity is particularly exciting because most of Wishbone’s founding members are Clemson University Alumni. Clemson was the place where we learned so many of the skills that we needed to work in the theatre professionally. It was where we began dreaming about possibilities, and were captivated by the magic of art and community. Our training there was a solid foundation upon which we were able to build our company and our friendships as an ensemble. So we are thrilled to be able to show our university what they helped us to create, and, also, to work with the students, to show them just one of the potential paths where their performance training can lead them.

We will also be using our time at Clemson as a residency. Given that Spandex has a simple and streamlined technical setup, Wishbone is using our additional time to create new work. After many seasons of doing a mix of scripted, adapted, and original work, we have realized that we have the most interest and the most audience enthusiasm from the original work we produce. This is very exciting, as it is somewhat uncommon, and gives us the confidence to create shows that really speak to the issues and stories that we care about, while still retaining our humor and whimsy. We can’t spill the beans about our new project just yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know soon.

In the meantime, especially if you’re in the Greenville/Clemson area, please watch for updates about Spandex and join us in investigating and fighting for a better country and a better world.

Annoucing our 2014 Chicago Fringe Show!

Wishbone is beyond thrilled to return to the Chicago Fringe Festival this fall! We took a hiatus this past year to attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (which was AWESOME), but let me tell you, it feels great to be back on our home turf.

I'd like to take this opportunity to officially announce our new production A Play About You and Me. It's a new play from company member Mandy Stertz. (That's me!) The genesis of this play was a really bad breakup between myself and someone you probably don't know. I think almost everyone has a natural inclination to write about their break-ups. That's why diaries were invented, right? Well, instead of treading down the sappy "Dear, Diary..." path, I instead chose comedy. Comedy is comforting.

I've always enjoyed writing sketch comedy for Wishbone, so I decided to take a chance and start writing a really long sketch about myself and someone you probably don't know. I think my greatest goal for writing this play was to create a story and characters that everyone could empathize with. My second greatest goal was to seek a teeny tiny bit of revenge. I'd like to think of myself as the Taylor Swift of playwrights, and this play, my friends, is my ultimate break-up song. (Ha!)

So, what's the premise? Well, you’re stuck on the “L”. You’re not moving. On an average day this would truly stink, but on this day, you look up and the one person you never ever want to see again is stuck on that train with you. Alone.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to introduce the artistic team that will be working on this fun and fantastic play that you all are coming to see. Well, there's me. Obviously.
